Governor Ahmed signs amendment bill stopping payment of pension to former governors, deputies

Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara state on Tuesday, March 13, signed into law an amendment bill stopping payment of pension to former governors and deputy governors during any period they hold political or public office, Leadership reports.

This was disclosed in a statement by Dr. Muhideen Akorede, the governor's senior special assistant on media and communications.

NAIJ.com gathered that the Kwara State House of Assembly had recently passed the bill following consideration of a report presented by Emmanuel Abodunrin, the chairman, house committee on establishment and public service.

Former governors and their deputies with the signing of the amended law by Ahmed will not be entitled to pension and other benefits whenever they hold a political or public office.

Meanwhile, the governor also gave his assent to the Ilorin Township (Prohibition Against the Production, Sale and Consumption of Liquor in Certain Areas) Law, 2018 as passed by the Kwara State House of Assembly.

Under the law, no person will be allowed to produce, sell, store or openly consume alcohol within specified areas in the metropolis.

In a previous report by NAIJ.com, the Kwara state House of Assembly on Tuesday, February 27, passed an amendment bill halting payment of pension to former governors, deputy governors and other officers holding political offices after their tenure in office.

The passage of the bill followed the consideration of the report of the house committee on establishment and public service at the committee of the whole house sitting in Ilorin.

The motion for the passage of the bill was moved by the deputy house leader, Segilola Abdulkadir and was unanimously adopted by members.
